Fixed All-on-4 vs. removable snap-on dentures

Both replace a full arch of teeth using dental implants. The big difference: one stays in, and one comes out.

Short answerAll-on-4 teeth are fixed: a full arch attached to four to six implants (four minimum) that stays in your mouth. A snap-on denture is removable: a metal-based denture that clips onto implants and comes out for cleaning. It is not as thin as All-on-4 teeth, but an upper snap-on is made without covering the palate. Snap-on is the more affordable option; All-on-4 feels more like natural teeth.

Who tends to choose fixed All-on-4?

People who want teeth that feel as close to natural as possible and stay in every day. All-on-4 usually does not require bone grafting, and most patients leave on surgery day with a temporary set of fixed teeth.

Who tends to choose a snap-on denture?

People who want much more stability than a regular denture at a more affordable level, who like being able to take the teeth out to clean them, or who already wear a denture and want it to stop slipping.

A note on “full arch”

“Full arch” just means all the teeth in the upper or lower jaw. It can be fixed or removable, so always ask which one an office means.

Individual results vary. Your consult and 3D imaging decide your plan.

Frequently asked questions

Is a snap-on denture the same as All-on-4?

No. All-on-4 teeth are fixed and only your dental team removes them. A snap-on denture is removable: it clips onto implants and you take it out to clean it.

Which is more affordable?

Snap-on dentures are the more affordable implant option. Your fee for either option is given to you in writing after your free consult.

Does full arch mean fixed?

Not always. Full arch simply means replacing all the teeth in an upper or lower jaw. It can be done with fixed teeth like All-on-4 or with a removable snap-on denture.

Can I get teeth the same day with All-on-4?

In most cases, yes. You usually leave on surgery day with a temporary set of fixed teeth (not zirconia), and receive your final zirconia teeth about four months later. Snap-on dentures usually need about four months of healing before the final denture goes on.

Does All-on-4 need bone grafting?

Usually not. All-on-4 usually does not require bone grafting. Your consult and 3D imaging decide your plan.

Does an upper snap-on denture cover the roof of my mouth?

No. An upper snap-on denture is made without covering the palate (the roof of the mouth). It is not as thin as All-on-4 teeth, because it is a removable, metal-based denture.

Can I switch from a snap-on denture to fixed teeth later?

Sometimes, depending on the number and position of the implants and your bone. Ask about it at your consult if you want to keep that door open.
